Summary

The Bulgarian Geographical Society was formed immediately after the World War I in 1918. Its founders were A. Ishirkov and Zh. Radev — eminent professors at the Sofia State University, as well as, numerous teachers in geography. During the first phase of its existence (until 9. IX. 1944) the main activities had for an object to popularize geography, to provide school teaching in geography with suitable methodology and to publish scientific works. Every year the society participated in organizing and carrying out pedagogical conferences on geographical and historical problems accompanied by field-trips to different parts of the country. In 1932 it began to issue a scientific publication titled ’Bulletin of the Bulgarian Geographical Society’.

In the period after 9. IX. 1944, Bulgarian Geographical Society extended its organizing activities. In addition to the abovementioned bulletin, accounting for 17 volumes at that time, other five volumes of scientific collections, known by the name of ’Problems of Geography in Bulgaria’, came out. The ’Geography’ magazine also gained popularity. Few National Geographic congresses held in 1968, 1973 and 1977, analyzed in details the achievements of geography in Bulgaria and traced out some problems which should be solved by our geographers in thy near future. Recently in some big district towns Bulgarian Geographical Societe created its own branches. Now Bulgarian geographers contribute actively to solve especially those concrete 'taskts in the sphere of geography, evolving from the national programmes whose goal is to build up advanced socialism in our country.
