THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RUSSIAN ONE AND THREE VERST MARS FOR SOME GEOGRAPHICAL INVESTIGATIONS IN BULGARIA

Summary

On the occasion of the centenary of Bulgarian liberation from Ottoman rule and owing to the drawing up of the first precise Russian topographic map, embracing all Bulgarian territory at that time, the authors review certain geodetic and topographic achievements of Russian topographers under the heavy climatic and military circumstances. They point out their heroism and anxiety for drawing up a topographic map of an enslaved country, seized by bitter cold, different deseas es and fierce struggles against the enemy.

Further on, they analyze the road infrastructure, settlements, springs, archaeological monuments, gullies, meanders and other elements, illustrated on the map to satisfy the requirements of various natural and social sciences and of geography in particular.

Special attention is paid to the three verst map which serves as a basis to draw a geographical wall map used for educational and administrative purposes. In fact, it is the first complete cartographic presentation of all geographical components in Bulgaria.
