ANTHROPOGENIC CHANGES OF HERBACEOUS CENOSES IN THE TCHEPELARE RIVER BASIN
D. Gorunova
(Summary)
Man’s interference in the natural development of herbaceous cenoses at the upper course of the Tchepelare river has become more and more intensive recently. Meadows and pastures, the main forrage there, are insufficient for the available live-stock. They are of secondary origin, having replaced the former coniferous forests. They keep their physiognomy of herbaceous cenoses as a result of annual mowing and grazing.
On the basis of regular and detailed observations and correlations, the changes of herbaceous cenoses, caused by anthropogenic factors such as mowing, fertilizing, grazing, trampling, etc., have been analysed along the upper course of the Tchepelare river in the West Rhodopes. Variations of plant number, diversity and chemical composition, dynamics of biomass and simplification of cenosis structure are to be found. Due to spontaneous grazing, valuable herbaceous fodder crops have disappeared and others, rough and even poisonous, have taken their place.
So, urbanization and recreation have adverse consequences on the vegetation. Ifonly once the trampling down of plants by tourists, vehicles and animals ceases, the original natural cenoses would be regenerated to some extent. However, all kinds of changes make herbaceous cenoses more resistant to the anthropogenic influence.
