Summary

Development and spatial distribution of the productive forces is related to the appearance of different in shape, rank and completeness territorial-production complexes. To bind the main branches of specialisation wih those complementing them is a guarantee for their successful future. Usually the economic sectors in them are interconnected from technological, productive and economic viewpoint. Industry, being the most important element in building up the material and technical foundation of socialism and its highest form of spatial distribution — the industrial complex, plays a leading role in the territorial organisation of productive forces and the settlement system’s formation and evolution.

The spatial forms of industrial organisation and the territorial-production complexes are nuclei for all inhabited localities and unite them into settlement systems. The latter are groups of settlements, linked together by common production, transport, socio-economic, cultural and educational functions. Precidence is given to the central cities to form settlement systems which make the other inhabited localities gravitate to them.

There is a correspondence among the forms of industrial spatial organisation (ind. complex, ind. agglomeration or ind. node, ind. centre or ind. core and ind. spot), the territorial-production complexes (macro-, mezo- and micro-complexes and elementary microcomplexes), the settlement systems (regional, subregional, microregional and local) and the integral forms of economic regionalisation (economic region, subregion, microregion and zone of local gravitation), illustrated in a table.
