GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS AND TENDENCIES IN TOWN FORMATION AND DEVELOPMENT IN BULGARIA

N. Michev

Summary

Three stages can be distinguished in the formation and development of modern towns in Bulgaria. The first began with the victory of socialist revolution (1944) and ended In the latter half of the 1950s. Although the town formation was very slow, the urban population in a few large and middle-sized towns increased considerably. What was specific for them was that they developed compactly within their administrative boundaries.

The second stage dated from the beginning of the 1960s to the first half of the 1970s. It was typical for its unprecedented high rates of town formation and urban population growth. New towns emerged not so much on the basis of the existing socio-economic structure as on the potential one. Spatially deconcentrated towns, i. e. towns which extended beyond their administrative boundaries with respect to places of residence, work and recreation, became a specific feature of urbanization. They were nuclei of the future urban aggllomerations.

The third stage, which is still in progress, covered the period since the mid-1970 s. It brought to existence a new type of settlement forms, the settlement systems, which were considered as subsystems of integral socio-economic regions, differently ranked.
