STATE AND PROBLEMS OF LANDSCAPE SCIENCE IN BULGARIA

Summary

K. Mishev, M. Georgiev, M. Daneva

Landscape science in Bulgaria began its development after 1973, when respective departments were formed at the Institute of Geography of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and at the Geologic and Geographic faculty of the Sofia University. Two types of problems form the subject of exploration: theoretical-methodological and practical-applicational ones, the latter prevailing in significance. This paper makes an analysis of the character and the significance of the themes, which have been objects of scientific attention in the former and will be in the perspective scientific plans of the two departments, the contents of the basic publications and doctor’s dissertations, seminars and courses of qualification, organized of late, etc. This review shows clearly, that important changes take place in the subject, the object and the aims of landscape studies and the science of landscapes is getting the character of a renewed, fundamental, constructive and prognostic one. It has been gaining importance and the raising interest of government authorities, national committees, councils, etc. is proving this fact. Landscape science is getting an integrational character as well.

Perspective development of landscape science envisages treatment of the problems of rational use of nature and introduction of the general and modern trends and methods of contemporary science, such as: the ecologic, the mathematical, the systematical approach, air-photography, stationary observations, use of the carthograhic methods; detailed investigations of the mountainous landscapes and the anthropogenetic modifications of natural-technologic systems. The following problems are of main interest: exploration of the landscape aspects of the scientific basis of rational use of nature; working out a series of evaluative and prognostic landscape maps; organizing stationary observations in representative landscapes; precision of terminology, etc.
