PSAMOPHYTE VEGETATION OVER BEACHES AND DUNES OF THE BULGARIAN SEASIDE

Danka Gorunova, llia Vakarelov

Summary

An attempt is made in this paper to be determined the recreational value of beach and dune vegetation along the Bulgarian seaside. A significant part deals with the phytoncide activity of the volatile fraction of the leaves and young branches of some more interesting and dominating species, which contribute to improve the sanitary qualities and to optimise the natural environment.

Field investigations of the psamophyte vegetation have been carried out. 176 species in total have been established to form the qualitative contents of the grass cover. Some dominating species play the basic part in the formation of grass associations: Elymus .sabulosum, Ammophyla armaria, Erynqium maritimum. Marsdenia erecta. Pancratium maritimum, etc. Their high decorative qualities and the soft-green-blue hues in their colouring provoke pleasant optical sensations. Species of very high phytoncide activity during the summer and autumn months are: Jurinea Kilaca Azn., Clematis viticella L., Artemisia maritima L., Elymus sabulosus M. B,, etc. The total projective cover variates from 20 to 60%.

The rhythm of development and specificity of beach and dune psamophyte vegetation depend mainly on the physio-geographic conditions. The leading part is played by the edophic factor and the level of the underground waters.
