GEOGRAPHICAL ASPECTS OF OPTIMIZING THE USAGE OF NATURAL RESOURCES

M. Yordanova, S. Velev

Summary

Geography can considerably contribute to the solution of the problem ‘society-natural environment’. Its complex subject matter and the fact that it deals with each of the two basic subsystems of the natural-anthoropogenic system favour geographers in their work on that global problem of today.

The first necessary stage in research is to present quantitative models of the relationship between all man’s activities (55 in number) and all natural characteristics (94). In contrast to ‘Leopold’s matrix’ this model demonstrates a direct influence (that of nature on man’s activities) and a reverse influence (that of man’s activities on nature). The influence itself is calculated according to a 3-grade scale (1 — insignificant, 2 — moderate, 3 — heavy) and is divided into positive and negative, having in mind man and his health.

Direct links are twice as many as compared to the reverse and it only proves that the natural environment is of greater importance for man and his economic activities. That obvious trend will be even better discernible in future as the interaction between society and nature will enlarge its scope and become much more complicated. All anthropogenic activities such as industry, agriculture, dwelling, recreation, arc analysed from the viewpoint of their relations with the natural environment. Those natural components, being mostly damaged by man’s activities, are also pointed out.

Proceeding from the matrix’ comprehensive analysis there are distinguished such anthropogenic activities which, have to be urgently put under control and management: chemical industry, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy', motor transport, atomic power output and some branches of light indutry.
