Summary

The settlement systems in Bulgaria strongly differ from one another with respect to their area, population, natural geographical, production, demographic and socio-economic resources. On the basis of indicators bearing demographic, economic, production, transport, social servicing and administrative-regulating characteristics, the settlement systems fall under 9 functional types; 1) Multifunctional; 2) Industrial-administrative; 3) Industrial-administrative, recreational and balneological; 4) Industrial; 5) Industrial-agrarian and transport; 6) Industrial-agrarian, recreational-tourist and balneological; 7) Industrial-agrarian; 8) Agrarian-industrial; 9) Agrarian.

Each functional group of settlement systems is typical for its own demographic, economic, social, spatial and ecological conditions.
