Origin and development

Summary

It has been shown that the process of citifying of the Bulgarian population during the feudalism precedes industrial production. The city mode of living intensifies in the Renaissance. Its progress is retained during the Ottoman yoke.

After the Liberation considerable changes occurs both in the economic and cultural life in Bulgaria. Administration is set up. Factories come into being. The number of employees in the field of transport and education increases. Industrialization during the capitalism does not turn into a major factor stimulating urbanization because of economic and political reasons. That it why it does not spread all over the country. The city population hardly increases from 16,7 % in 1880 to 21,4 % in 1934. Agricultural workers keep a relative share of 80 %. The city mode of living lays down in the larger cities and the industrial centres.

Industrialization after the victory of the socialist revolution in Bulgaria causes deep differences between the peasants’ and the workers’ way of living especially of the industrial workers in the cities. A strong correlation between industrialization and urbanization is established and finds expression in very important features. This correlation strengthens and becomes valid for larger territories after the administrative-economic division of the country in 1959. Industry and city mode of living concentrate in the district centres. Industrialization and urbanization penetrate deeply into the mode of living of a larger part of the population in Bulgaria, thus improving its standart of living. The first negative results of the concentration and urbanization appears as well.
