The article deals with the rate of demographic growth of the Bulgarian towns for the period 1956 – 1985. It is shown that the demographic growth for the period is influenced mainly by the net migration. The rate of demographic growth of the urban population is highest during the first decay of the studied period, i. e. between 1956 – 1985, especially up to 1960. After that the rate of growth decreases. Urban net migration droppes considerably and after 1975 is more than 2,5 times lower than that for the period 1956 – 1965.

One of the steps to restrain the mechanical growth of the big Bulgarian towns’ population is to move out of their territories some of their functions. According to the author’s forcast the urban population of the country towards 2000 will amount 72 – 73%.
