PROBLEMS OF FURTHER INDUSTRIALIZATION OF THE BORDER REGIONS IN BULGARIA

Summary

The article deals with the settlement systems whose boundaries partially coincide with the state borders. Their number is 82. Fifty percent of them belong to the 4-th and 5-th functional type. The border settlement system occupy 28,7% of the total area of the country and comprise 23,8% of the population. They have at their disposal 18,2% of the basic production assets employ 22,6% of the employed in industry and provide 18,0% of the total industrial output of Bulgaria. Their industry develops at a higher rate than the national average. In 1964 – 1985 the industrial production marked a 8,2-fold increase while ist average growth on a nation-wide scale was 3.4. The number of the employed in industry went un by 4,8 times against 1,5 times on the average. Most accelerated was the rate of industrial development in the settlement systems of the 3-rd, 2-nd and 1-st functional type. At the same the relative share of the employed in industry was growing-ng faster in those of the 5-th, 4-th and t-nd functional types.
