DEVELOPMENT AND STRUCTURE OF THE BUDAPEST AGGLOMERATION

Bela Sharfalvy

Summary

The Budapest agglomeration is the only one highly developed agglomeration in Hungary, of the great economic potential and large agglomerated territory. It has been formed under the influence of specific historical, political and geographic factors.

Two general elements can be distinguished in the agglomeration’s structure: central city and agglomeration ring. The central city is divided into three parts: inner-centre where most of the places of work are concentrated; inner belt all around the city-centre characterized by heterogeneous functions “places of work - residence” and outer belt whose functions are “residence – places of work”. The Budapest city centre is situated on the left bank of the Danube river. It bears a resemblance to the large cities in Europe by ostentatious signs. Its population consists of 50 thousand people in 1984. The population is 19 200 p/km2. The relative share of the economically active population is 65%, while 9/10 of all the places of work come under the tertiary sphere of activity.

About 700 thousand places of work are concentrated in the inner “residence – places of work” belt. Its population density is 5 000 p/km2. Exchange of labour force is obviously expressed. Approximately 490 thousand people arrive every day to the inner belt while 470 thousand people leave it.

The outer “residence – places of work” belt includes 1/3 of the industry in Budapest. The density of its population is 2 500 p/km2.

57 settlements, 55-60 % of attractive force of Budapest eases and transitional.

The agglomerated territory can be divided into an agglomeration ring and des 62 settlements, 30-40 % of their active population goes every day to work to Budapest. Outside the transitional Budapest. The anter transitional zone inclubecomes equal to that of the neighboring regional centres in direction to the boundary within 60 km radius.

The contemporary development of the Budapest agglomeration is closely connected with a lot of quantitative changes whose action finds expression in the geographical differentiation of the demographic, social and economic processes.
