ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHICAL PROBLEMS OF THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC TERRITORIAL SYSTEMS IN NORTH-WESTERN BULGARIA

Radka Naidenova

Summary

North-Western Bulgaria is hierarchically formed as a macroregional system (i.e. socio-economic region), consisting of 3 mezoregional and 9 microregional subsystems. On all regional levels the system-forming processes are promoted by production and non-production sphere. Engineering plays the most important role in consolidating the integrational links on macroregional level, especially the manufacture of electric trucks, long-distance communication system, water pumps, spare parts, as well as repairing of farming machinery. The agro-industrial integration has resulted in 3 types of agroindustrial systems: sectorial, intersectorial and regional. System forming functions performs also the construction complex, which includes the production of building materials and the building industry, proportionately developed. Transport infrastructure (the railway and road network and the Danube river transport) is crucial for the current system-forming processes.

Techno-scientific potential of North-Western Bulgaria is still inadequate. This is the only region without any institute of higher education.

The mezoregional socio-economic territorial systems (those of Vratsa, Mikailovgrad and Vidin) differ from one another in terms of their sectorial structure and degree of gravitation to the respective integrational centres. Each of them has specific economic and social problems caused by depopulation and the steady decrease of labour resources.
