STATE AND PROBLEMS OF ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION IN ROUMANIA

Summary

The future economic growth in Roumania is inevitably associated with the never increasing demand for thermal and electric power output. The programs adopted, which aim at energy saving measures and at more efficient energy consumption, have taken into consideration the current changes in the world energy market, as well as the way the country exports or imports power resources and electricity.

The author tries to reveal the specific features of the Roumanian electric power supply basing himself on the economic geographical analysis of the national fuel reserves and energy-producing capacities and on the echelons in power generating cycle. He emphasizes the region-forming functions of the thermal stations which are the major factor for territorial-production unity in the industrial zones. Attention is paid to the problem of the most effective location of hydro-electric power stations and to the perspectives of nuclear power industry. The author also points out that the nuclear stations arc comparatively footloose and their distribution does not depend on extractable resources. So, the nuclear stations are recommended to be built in regions poor in fossil fuel in order to decentralize the energy-intensive industries and to achieve a balanced electricity consumption in Roumania. It is stressed upon the necessity to improve the configuration of the electric transmission network. At the same time the structure of electricity consumption is analyzed for each economic sector.

The typification of the districts according to the level to which their energy requirements are satisfied has made possible to outline 5 power-generating regions: Southwestern, Southern, Eastern, Central and Southeastern. All of them are separately characterized. Finally some conclusions are drawn with regard to the importance of power industry for the development of the national economy, to its geographical location and integrating nature.
