PREREQUISITES FOR THE ECONOMIC ACTIVATION OF THE BULGARIAN NORTH-WESTERN TERRITORY NEAR THE FRONTIER WITH YOUGOSLAVIA

Mikhail Mikhailov

The territory under consideration occupies the northwestern part of the territory of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria and includes 17 municipalities uniting 65 settlements (towns and villages). The surface area is I 692, 9 km2, and the population — 61 140 (1972).

This paper deals with the basic social and economic problems of that area and it is a study of the real possibilities for the utilization of the natural resources — i. e. the geographic, social, and economic prerequisites for the economic activation of the said area.

The reproduction of the population in the territory under consideration is among the lowest for the country. The natural increase of the population has become dangerously low lately, owind to the considerable reduction of the dirth-rate The migration towards Sofia, Vidin, Mikhailovgrad and some other Bulgarian towns and cities serves also to increase the process of depopulation of the villages in the area. The negative demographic processes and the decrease of the labour resources have a detrimental effect on the activation of the economic development of the territory.

The basic tendency to economic activation of that territory should have above all a social effect. It is necessary to ensure a tendency for maintaining the same number of population in perspective, so that in 1980 the number of the population should not be lower that the 1972 number.
